About The Cortes Island Shellfish Interpretive Center

The words "Cortes Island" and "quality shellfish" are synonymous in many parts of the world.

Situated 100 miles north of Vancouver, between Vancouver Island and the mainland coast, the cool, pristine waters of the Salish Sea that lap at the shores of Cortes Island are free of pollution from over-development. Nutrient-rich tidal flows wash our sheltered bays and beaches creating ideal growing conditions for some of the best shellfish to be found anywhere.

And, for the most part, Cortes Island shellfish farms are small family operations who take pride in their ability to grow quality rather than high volume products.

The Shellfish Interpretive Center and web site were developed to educate the public about shellfish farming on Cortes Island, and the need to safeguard our waters. The web site is also an invaluable tool for buyers of shellfish to source out product directly from the growers, and to satisfy themselves that they are indeed receiving a genuine Cortes Island product.

For more information, contact Marcel Creurer, Director of the Cortes Island Seafood Association at: Ph/Fax (250)935-6681; e-mail jumarcortes@msn.com

This project has been funded in part by the Community Futures Development Corporation and the Regional District of Comox-Strathcona.
